Rïa Mehta’s debut album ‘Metamorphosis’

Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, and self-taught sound architect Rïa Mehta makes a powerful entrance with her debut album Metamorphosis, out on 6/27/25 via Perspectives Digital. A deeply cinematic and personal journey told across nine intricately crafted tracks, this release marks a bold chapter in Rïa’s creative evolution — one that bridges dancefloor power with inner reflection.

Raised across Sri Lanka, Dubai, London, and India, Rïa brings her third-culture identity into sharp focus here —  especially on the title track, Metamorphosis. It’s direct, club-ready, and deeply emotional, anchored by subtle South Asian sounds, and dreamy vocals featuring rising star Gaalia.

But this album goes deeper than sound design. In our interview, Rïa revealed she used her own voice for the first time after struggling to find the right sample. “Letting go of ‘what will people think’ was a real shift,” she shared. Continuing the deeply personal path, she named one of the tracks "Taylor" — after her partner, Brian — whose influence and effortless piano playing helped shape the mood and spirit of the entire album’s arc.

From a hidden Dark Knight Rises vocal nod to the internal tension of embracing her Indian roots via Hindi vocals, Metamorphosis is an album full of truths — some loud, some quietly felt. “It’s for the strangers on the dancefloor,” Rïa says. “The ones who give me everything when I play. Even if they never know it.”

The full album flows from ambient introspection (Far Away) to late-night emotional resonance (All of Me, I Want You), and hypnotic standouts like Jharī and Naina that blur the line between East and West, organic and synthetic, memory and momentum.

Rïa Mehta has arrived — not chasing trends, but building her own world. Metamorphosis is more than an album. It’s a statement of identity, vulnerability, and the power of transformation.

I Want You

1. What did you have to let go of to finish this track?

I couldn’t find the right vocal sample, so I ended up using my own voice — which I’ve always been self-conscious about. Letting go of “what will people think” felt like a real shift.

2. Which version of you does this track belong to?

Authentic. Evolving. Me. I wanted to move away from dreamy collabs and back toward tracks I actually want to play out. As a result, the track’s direct and club-focused while still having a dreamy aspect (the breakdown), and Gaalia’s vocal strikes that balance perfectly.

3. What non-musical thing shaped this? (A city, heartbreak, fabric, incense, prayer?)

The cowbell. It sneaks into the breakdown, and it’s a sound that instantly takes me back to growing up in Asia. Even though it’s subtle, it anchors the track in something personal.

4. When you close your eyes, what image plays during this track?

There are two. First — there’s a vocal in the breakdown that’s a subtle nod to "The Dark Knight Rises", which is one of my favorite movies. The second is my partner, Brian. We’d just started seeing each other when I made this, and I was genuinely inspired by his ear and the way he approaches music. The track’s actually named after him.

5. What truth were you afraid to tell here, but told anyway?

That I care. Deeply. There’s this cool, effortless artist vibe people chase — but this track is all of me showing up, flaws and all, for the dream.

6. What’s something no one will hear in this track… but you’ll always feel?

That in-between feeling of being a third culture kid. The blend of sounds isn’t obvious to everyone, but it carries a sense of where I’m from — where I’ve been — cross cultural, never fully one or the other.

7. If this track was a scent or a season, what would it be?

Spring. Not because it’s light — but because it’s about movement and starting fresh without overthinking. A lot of that energy came from my partner too — his effortless piano playing brought such an ease to the track, it helped shape the whole mood; perfect to kick off the last 2 tracks of the album which don’t really fit into a single genre/vibe.

8. Was there a moment in the process where you almost scrapped it? Why didn’t you?

Totally — I second-guessed having Hindi vocals. I’ve lived outside India most of my life, but my roots (and now family) are there. So I thought: this is my debut album — if I don’t honor my roots now, when will I?

9. If you could dedicate this track to one person who’ll never hear it — who would it be?

Probably someone who’s never heard my music — but would’ve connected with it. This track isn’t a love song in the usual sense, but I made it with the dancefloor in mind… for those strangers who give me everything when I play. It’s for them, even if they'll never know it.
